Hell is a fundamental doctrine of the Church and always has been; the doctrine has met very little opposition worthy of mention throughout the history of Christianity. In fact, people that do not believe in the existence of God or the immortality of the soul in the first place usually deny it. The existence of Hell comes straight from the Holy Scriptures; Christ and His Apostles even presuppose the very knowledge of its existence. We see this in Matthew 5:29; 8:12; 10:28; 13:42; 25:41, 46; 2 Thessalonians 1:8; Revelation 21:8, etc etc.

We were made to worship God. We were created for God, by God, for His delight. The sooner we realize and accept this the better because we might just spare ourselves the illusion of the worship of temporal things. We will try to fill the great hole in our being with things other then God e.g. material possessions, sex, alcohol/drugs, etc. None of these things can ever really compete, though -- which is why we will inevitably fall into despair. The evil one will use that against us. The evil one will use our own despair as a weapon. And there is only one true defense against it, Jesus Christ.
